automated teller machine (ATM)

a machine that permits customers to gain access to their accounts through the use of a magnetically encoded plastic card and by pushing appropriate buttons on a computer terminal. ATMs dispense cash, transfer funds from one account to another, accept deposits, perform other functions, and are generally available 24 hours a day.
